Castle Rock-tober

Some of my favorite images were photographed in October in Colorado a year and a half ago. It had been a wet summer, which made autumn resplendent, even after the aspens had fluttered-away their leaves. The hills around Castle Rock unfurled a tapestry of greens, golds and russets, while the distant hills and sky wove an appropriate border of complementary purples and blues.  

In a week I will be photographing the beauty of New Mexico. Can you sense my excitement?

Peak and Garden of the Gods

There's a road near both the Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak where you can get a peak at both. In October of last year, this is how it looked. I loved October in Colorado last year. I'll go back again, but not just yet.

Colorado Moose Calf

We had driven for two days without seeing any wildlife, then critters began appearing out of nowhere, or maybe we finally acclimated to our surroundings and could see the forest for the trees.  

This calf was on one side of the meandering stream and the cow was on the other.  Thankfully, I was not between them when the opportunity to photograph them came.

Divide

I came across a photo I took of the Continental Divide and felt like painting it again. I don't know how many times I've done it in the course of two and a half years since I've been there, but this little pond is one of my simple, favourite places. No jagged mountains, no rocky rivers, no canyons or wildlife.  Just a cute reflecting pond.

Continental Divide

"Continental Divide"

The Continental Divide slumbered behind the trees along this creek that I passed several times a day near the resort where I stayed in Winter Park.


This is a thirty minute painting. According to Robert Genn of The Painter's Keys, it's good to do them with some regularity... "to focus and pay attention, if only for a short time. It's been identified as a primary key to the development of human effectiveness."

Purple Pansy

She was one of the darkest pansies in the planters up at the top of the ski lift at Winter Park, Colorado last summer.  Most of them were pale, small, lacking oxygen, like I was.  Or maybe it was just my perception up at that altitude.

Purple Pansy was painted with glazes of dioxazine purple and permanent rose.  I waited for her to dry and buffed on a glaze of a transparent yellow to warm up her overall appearance.
