There's a road near both the Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak where you can get a peak at both. In October of last year, this is how it looked. I loved October in Colorado last year. I'll go back again, but not just yet.

Cool, Dry and High

I stood on the side of a road to shoot in the general direction of Pikes Peak near Garden of the Gods that mid-October day. I had the good fortune to be in the State while a few colorful trees still adorned the foreground, and of course, the red spires of the Garden repeated some of the warm tree colors. 

This is a cute small painting of one of my favorite places to photograph and to paint.

From the Peak

"From the Peak"

On the way down Pikes Peak, while riding the Cog Railway, I saw how flat Colorado is to the east, once you get to the base of the mountain. Colorado Springs is the final flat before the Rockies jut into the brilliant blue sky the rest of that State. 

Here's a quick study of a piece I'll probably paint as an oil painting some day.

Snow on the Peak

I was in Colorado in September a year ago when we wakened to snow on the Peak.  Pikes Peak acts as an indicator, a harbinger of sorts, to announce the arrival of autumn. 

I was also there in October when I took the photo that inspired this painting. I love the colors of Colorado in the fall. Green is kept to a minimum and I get to squeeze colors from tubes I seldom use in Illinois landscapes, or roses.

The Peak From Flying Horse

It was October, the balcony still had tables and chairs, so we requested outdoor seating to overlook this view of Pikes Peak.  I can taste the air, the food, the ambiance of that evening. 

I have friends who take me to places that look like this. How lucky am I? Now imagine what you'd want to eat as you ponder this.  Yup, that's what I had, too!

Pikes Peak Morning

From the overlook near Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs is a view across many miles of uncluttered terrain that begins with scrub oaks, through pine trees, rock outcroppings and the foothills leading up to Pikes Peak.  It's free for the stopping.

This is a study for a larger painting.  I have collected many images of this view, and hope to do it justice some time soon.
