Rainier Cherries are in season.  I love their crisp juiciness and creamy white flesh.  I've eaten many this year, and will miss them terribly.  Alas, the things we absolutely adore tend to have a short run.

Banded/Cherries

I collect banded rocks, for some reason. I found my first one as a child and thought it was worthy of keeping.  The vertical piece is leftover marble slabs glued together from a fireplace surround, and the cherries, well, they were delicious. 


I stacked the rocks against the marble, then added the cherries. I didn't want to put them in a bowl, or on a table, or anyplace traditional.

Pitcher Playground

The cherry kids enjoyed playing on the empty vinegar pitcher after school that autumn.  The vessel was so much easier to climb than when it was full. 
 This is a possible work in progress. I am living with it and listening to comments as people see it in my studio.  I may glaze color over the draped fabric surrounding the pitcher. The values are in place, but I don't know what color I'd use.  Any ideas?

Winged Frog

To the right of the hobnail vase sits a winged pewter frog holding a glass vial with a daisy in it. He was the add in when I set up this arrangement. I needed something to go in that space that was not to heavy, not too dark, but Baby Bear... "just right." 

I set it up, shone a light on it and did a quick study.  I realized I would never paint it again. I wouldn't want to have to explain the winged frog. He doesn't read well unless you happen to know what he is. I love the colors, so maybe I will paint another, but not with him.

Cherries on a Platter

They rolled around on my old crystal platter until they came to rest against the fluted edge. What made the turquoise reflections?  Bright turquoise daisies in a vase just out of sight.  They were the original subject of my photo shoot, but these three cherries stole the show with their crescent-shaped highlights repeating the markings on the platter.

It was a joyful moment when I realized I'd be covering a lot of the surface of this piece with cadmium red light. I had only used it a few times prior to this and loved the way it responded to glazing with my sponge.

Hobnail Peek-a-boo

When my mother's old hobnail fan vase toppled, cherries rolled all over my setup.  I did a quick glance for damage control and noticed, probably, the culprit hiding behind the foot of the small vase.  His contorted grimace of guilt gave him away.  You can roll, but you can't hide! 

I enjoyed working with the red-orange and and blue-green complements in this painting. The reflections were fun to isolate and place accurately.  In the end, however, I needed some of the red in the opposite corner and placed some decorative brushwork up there. It added a bit of chaotic whimsy to the piece.
