Alcohol Ink on Yupo

Oh, boy, you must think I've abandoned my oils for alcohol ink. Well, I haven't. In fact, while these are posting, I'm working on commission pieces, including a dog portrait! Yes. I'm doing a pastel painting of a pooch. 

Here is a combination of many of the techniques I learned from Pat Hamm. My work is nothing like hers. It would be almost impossible for me to duplicate her efforts in this medium. Nope, hers are hers, mine are quite definitely mine.

Red Sky Warning

The red sky was a warning of things to come. The storm was a day away, but definitely brewing. The coastal waters roiled, the birds darted and dove, keening a primal forewarning. 

No real storm or foreboding took place to produce this painting.  I had a LOT of cad red light on my brush and made the best of it. Prussian was the complement and then a little lemon yellow.  So dramatic.

Split Complement

A box of pears arrived at my door this week.  Not only was I excited to eat them, my friend sent me models!  I painted a lot of them last December when friends blessed me with the season's finest.  'Tis the season!  

What goes with yellow green?  I consulted my colour wheel and found the split complement to be red and violet.  Yum. Two of my favorite colours.  I even made the board a combination of the two.

Sailor's Delight

My first mother-in-law spoke in rhyme all the time. She learned her lessons as a child and repeated them throughout her life. Hers was a time of memorization, not of Googling. I learned weather warnings, vowel placement and what to ride to Banbury Cross from her. 

My offering this evening is a sky while I work on my commission piece. You'll see more of it tomorrow.

Peel Me

I saw the light and shadows on the loose outer peel of this Bermuda onion and decided if I could get her home without the cashier mishandling her, I'd paint her on one of the backgrounds I had prepared for exactly this purpose.  It worked.  

I could grow to like painting from life ... more regularly.

Mango Maze

Mangoes were two for $5 when I was at Whole Foods at noon on Tuesday.  They were the largest ones I had ever seen. I bought two.  I went home and photographed them both and painted this one from life. Then I ate one.  The next morning I went back to buy as many as I could, since cherries are now out of season. The produce man remembered me, and was astounded that I was already back for more.  That's when I found out that mangoes are now out of season, too.

When the results came back, I asked to see the image.  It was black and shades of gray and white. I liked the patterns and I imagined the actual internal color of my breast.  I decided to paint my perfectly normal mammogram. That's my nipple on the right, by the way.  Just the way you envisioned it, right? 

I painted this with acrylics and accented it with interference paint, so it has a metallic shimmer when seen in the right light. And the title... well, the word "Untitled" contains the word tit, so I thought it would be appropriate.

In the Nick of Time

Rainier Cherries are in season.  I love their crisp juiciness and creamy white flesh.  I've eaten many this year, and will miss them terribly.  Alas, the things we absolutely adore tend to have a short run.

Fusion

Two elements, solids in their own right, collide. They swirl, liquefy and amalgamate. The synergy of their fiery union bears repeating. 


Please enjoy one of my favorites in the series of abstracted swirl paintings. Today's canvas is not only filled with swirls, some of them have developed tails, adding an active element to the mix.

Fractalish Fire Dance

Energy spun, twirled and whirled in this magical realm charged with saturated, hot colors—dazzling my senses.  

My intrigue with fractals continued as I explored the graceful curves of of several swirls in different sizes and colors of balls.  I even swirled the nearly dry paint into the circular shapes with an eighth-inch bristle brush.

Log Cabin

This is my take on a log cabin quilt with the red hot chimney around which most cabins were built.  As you can see I got bored with the traditional cabin piecing within about two strips, so I abandoned it and went for something a bit more daring.  


This is one of my "less recent" pieces while I work on a larger current piece.

Strawberry Jam in the Morning

My favorite way to start the day is with strawberry jam in the morning. So sweet. So thick. So delicious. Strawberry is my flavor of choice. Occasionally I'll have raspberry. Just for the sake of variety. But I find raspberry a little too—tart. And so I return to strawberry.


I found this jar in the refrigerator. It seemed like it wanted to be painted. I brought it down to Studio B—below ground—and painted... something completely different.

"How's Chuck doing?" I asked Judy last week when I saw her.  "They call him Superman at the hospital," she said.  You see, one day not too long ago Chuck wasn't feeling well. He went to the doctor and didn't come home ...from the hospital. Leukemia.  Chuck is living on borrowed blood.  It's the only thing keeping him alive... that and our prayers. 

Prayers for Chuck Simon are in order. He's a dear man, my friend, adoring husband, loving father, and a mensch.

Vintage Famolare Clog

I heard her approaching long before she walked into the room, clomping like a child in mama's high heels. She was as comfy in her footwear as I was in my Sketchers, even though hers were thirty years old!  She pulled off one of them, showed me how it still didn't hurt her feet, and clomped on through to take Gracie and Edgar for a walk.  


My friend, Fran, brought her Famolare Clogs for me to see.  I hadn't been a part of this particular fashion movement, but appreciated the opportunity to see them and photograph her pristine pair.
